As the world becomes more complex and automation takes over more and more of the physical world, there will be an ever-growing demand for technicians who can keep everything running. This will be particularly true as the world moves to a decentralized, low carbon energy mix and more and more devices are connected in what is called the IOTs.
The way these jobs function, will, however, evolve and we should expect extensive use of augmented reality and artificial intelligence in technical fields. Schneider Electric, for example, has a phone app that allows a technician to look at the inside of closed power cabinets that show the voltage across different circuits, the temperature running through the switches, and other technical parameters.
